I. TOPICS OF DISCUSSION
1. Annual
Field Inspections: Team Safety performed inspections of the District’s
field facilities.
a.
Carmel Valley Field Office - Results of the Field Office Inspection were very
positive. The work areas continue to be
organized and cleared of housekeeping hazards found in previous
inspections. Fire extinguishers were
operable and inspected. The first aid kits were well stocked. Only one minor
safety issue was discovered, as follows:
1) One of the two fluorescent
light fixtures in the main office area needs to be secured. The other light had
the same problem and was fixed during the last inspection.
b.
1) There was an excessive amount of wood curls and sawdust residue in the drilling machine and on the shop floor that should have been cleaned up. Goggles and shield/helmet facemasks were dirty and unusable as found. They should be cleaned and stored in protective plastic containers. Tools were lying haphazardly on the workbench. They should be stored properly.
2) The shop vacuum and metal press, left unused for a long time, are still there and taking up space which is causing other equipment to almost block entrance and exit from the door. The shop vacuum should be assembled and used to clean up the floors and work surfaces. No evaluation has been done as to whether the metal press should be auctioned off as surplus material. This should be accomplished within the next 60 days.
3) The large portable dredge is still blocking the door. The District has signed an agreement to use, store, and maintain the dredge for five years. Therefore, this machinery must be placed farther back from the doorway, so as not to be a hazard. If the metal press and vacuum are moved and/or removed, the dredge can be put in their place.
c.
further cleaned up since the last inspection and there is ample room for storage and walking around. However, a chain-link fence and damaged truck box should be removed for disposal, and remaining materials consolidated for even better use of the space.
d. Sleepy Hollow Steelhead Rearing Facility - There
were two major issues at the Sleepy Hollow facility as follows:
1) As
far as Sleepy Hollow’s fire-fighting equipment, there has been great
improvement from the last inspection.
The hydrant and valve have been repaired. The fire hose with holes eaten
by rodents has been replaced. It is
stored in the building where it is safe from such damage during the wet winter
season, but attached to the valve during the dry fire season.
2) Housekeeping,
however, which has been previously excellent, was an issue during this
inspection. The offices needed cleaning,
and the floor in the storage room was cluttered with equipment on the floor
from fish releases occurring during that week. The difficulty of keeping the
storage area orderly during fish operations is understood, and equipment did
not block exits or walkway. But clutter on the floors, should always be a
concern as a trip hazard.
Inspection Reports will be distributed to the appropriate Division Managers for review and remedial action.
II. NEXT TEAM SAFETY MEETING
The next Team Safety Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, February 24th
at 3:00 pm.
