SUMMARY:

May 2005

Total System for Month:  Total California American Water (Cal-Am) system production for May was 1,287 acre-feet (AF), eight percent less than the anticipated goal of 1,405 AF, as shown on the accompanying table (Exhibit 27-A). The 1,287 AF of production in May represents a 26 percent savings from Cal-Am's base year (i.e., Water Year 1988) production of 1,742 AF.

Total System, Water Year to Date:  Total system production for 2005 Water Year (WY) through May 31, 2005 has been 8,232 AF.  The anticipated production of 9,339 AF for this same period is based on an annual goal of 15,285 AF from the Cal-Am system for customer use plus a maximum of 350 AF for injection into the Seaside Basin.  Monthly production goals are calculated by multiplying total annual production (15,285 AF) times the average fraction of annual production for each month (based on production data from 1988 to 1997).

Ground Water Production:  During May, 78 AF were produced from Cal-Am wells in the Upper Carmel Valley.  This production was 15 percent less than the anticipated production of 92 AF.  Lower Carmel Valley (LCV) well production was 989 AF, five percent more than the anticipated production of 944 AF.  In May, 220 AF were produced by Cal-Am from the coastal subareas of the Seaside Basin, 40 percent less than the anticipated production of 369 AF.

Surface Water Production:  In May, no water was diverted through the Carmel Valley Filter Plant (CVFP) from San Clemente Reservoir, equivalent to the zero AF of production that was anticipated.  The total diversion through the CVFP for WY 2005 has been zero AF, or zero percent of total system production. Average release to the Carmel River from San Clemente Dam during May was 97 cubic feet per second, as measured at the Sleepy Hollow Weir.

The anticipated river flow, storage values and production goals were developed jointly by the District, Cal-Am, and the California Department of Fish and Game in consultation with NOAA Fisheries.  Cal-Am and District staff are monitoring reservoir storage, inflow and water quality, and will make additional changes as conditions warrant.  Please refer to Exhibit 27-A for additional information regarding Cal-Am production in May 2005.
