Carmel River Advisory Committee Meeting: On April 28, 2005, District staff met with the Carmel River Advisory Committee for a Regular Meeting. On May 25, 2005, District staff conducted a field tour of the All Saints Restoration Project and the Emergency Streambank Stabilization Project in the lower Carmel River. Minutes from those meetings will be made available after the next regularly scheduled Committee meeting on August 4, 2005.
State Proposition 50 Grant Applications: On May 12, 2005, the District submitted an application for a state-funded grant to prepare an Integrated Regional Water Management Plan and Integrated Coastal Watershed Management Plan for the area within the District boundary and the entire Carmel River watershed. District staff coordinated funding requests from several cities, other public agencies, and private non-profit organizations totaling $496,957.50.
Since the planning grant application was submitted, District staff has been working with the other plan participants to assemble information for an application for Proposition 50 funds for implementing a variety of projects, ranging from stormwater management to aquifer storage and recovery. The grant application deadline is July 14, 2005. The total amount of funds to be requested is expected to be approximately $27 million, of which approximately $2.8 million is for the District’s Seaside Groundwater Basin Aquifer Storage and Recovery Project.
The state agencies charged with reviewing the applications and administering the grant funds are scheduled to make a decision on the planning grant applications in October 2005, and in December 2005 on whether implementation grant applicants will be invited to the second stage of the application process. Staff will keep the Board apprised of any action or decision by the state reviewing agencies on the District’s applications.
