TOWN HALL MEETING ON WATER SUPPLY
August
25, 2005 beginning at 5:00 PM
Embassy
Suites, Seaside
SUMMARY:
The Monterey Peninsula Water Management District (MPWMD) Board has
scheduled this Town Hall Meeting for interested citizens to learn about and
provide their views on projects proposed by various public and private entities
to address our region’s water supply needs.
There will be no Board discussion or action taken at this meeting. The
event is comprised of two parts, as follows:
5:00-6:30 PM: Displays by project sponsors; informal one-on-one discussion with public.
6:30 PM: Workshop convenes; proponent presentations; questions and answers.
WORKSHOP
SESSION: MWPMD Board Chair Larry Foy will convene the
workshop session by introducing elected officials and presenters, and will
moderate a question-and-answer session.
Project proponents each will make 10-minute presentations about the
nature and status of their proposed water supply projects in the order noted
below. Written materials provided by
proponents may also be available.
1. Coastal Water Project (CWP) sponsored by California American Water (Cal-Am)
2. North Monterey County Desalination Project (NMCDP) sponsored by the Pajaro/Sunny Mesa Community Services District (P/SM)
3. Long-Term Water Supply Project/Desalination (WSP) sponsored by MPWMD
4. Aquifer Storage and Recovery in Seaside Basin (ASR) sponsored by MPWMD
5. Regional Urban Water Augmentation Project (RUWAP) sponsored by Marina Coast Water District (MCWD) and Monterey Regional Water Pollution Control Agency (MRWPCA)
6. Groundwater Recharge Project (GRP) sponsored by MRWPCA
7. Regional Urban Water Supply Policy Board, a shared governance concept to guide regional solutions to water supply needs, facilitated by Monterey County Water Resources Agency (MCWRA)
8. Overview of water supply project Comparative Matrix (update in progress) by MPWMD; next steps for MPMWD Board
Project proponents have been asked to briefly review their projects and provided status reports on progress as of August 2005. For detailed background information on these projects, refer to: http://www.mpwmd.dst.ca.us/asd/board/boardpacket/2004/20040929/07/item07.htm on the MPWMD website.
After
the presentations, the session will focus on questions and answers to the
panelists from the audience, as well as questions that have been received via e-mail. For the convenience of participants, writing
materials will be provided for citizens to note questions during the various
presentations. Citizens will be able to
pose their own questions to the panelists from a microphone/podium; or, if they
prefer, an MPWMD representative can read the question on behalf of an audience
member.
FUTURE
BOARD ACTION: The Town Hall Meeting is an opportunity for
citizens to 1) obtain information at one time on all current water project
opportunities that address the Monterey Peninsula’s long-term supply needs, and
2) provide their views to MPWMD Board members.
No MPWMD Board discussion or action is expected to be taken at the
meeting. The information and viewpoints
provided at the meeting, along with detailed data proponents have given to
MPWMD staff, will be used to update the Comparative Matrix of Water Supply
Options created by MPWMD staff last year.
The updated matrix will be presented at the September 8, 2005 MPWMD
Strategic Planning Workshop beginning at 8:30 AM at the Sunset Center Carpenter
Room, Carmel. At this Strategic Planning
workshop the MPWMD Board will discuss and provide direction on the role the
District should take in addressing the Peninsula’s long-term water supply
needs.
