Dear Mr. Melton:

The purpose of this letter is to request that you make your "Sustainable Water Supply Program for Monterey County" presentation to the MPWMD Board of Directors. We request that you make the presentation at either our regular evening meeting of March 17, or the Board’s special meeting/workshop scheduled for 7:00 p.m. March 27. Both meetings will take place in the board/conference room in the MPWMD office building at 5 Harris Court, Monterey.

Some of our Board members have seen the an earlier version of the presentation at the DRA REPOG meetings, and I was able to see the latest version at a recent Monterey City Council meeting. However, several other MPWMD Directors, who’ve read news articles or heard about it, would not otherwise have the benefit of seeing the presentation as they don’t sit on other entity boards. As you know, for the past several years the MPWMD Board, staff and advisory committees have been studying several desalination, recylced water and conjuntive use project alternatives that have been proposed to solve the Monterey Peninsula’s immediate replacement and long-term water supply needs. Thus, we have a particular interest in learning about the newly-identified north Marina area brackish water desalination component of the proposed sustainable water supply program. It’s my understanding that this project concept has been advanced as a regional alternative to California American Water’s proposed Coastal Water Project. Because MPWMD regulations require District Board authorization of any new CAW source of supply, it’s important that all of our Directors have an early opportunity to be briefed on the brackish water desalination project and other elements of the proposed regional water supply program.
