SUMMARY: In
2007, the pressure transducer that measures the water level in the river pump
gallery at the Sleepy Hollow Steelhead Rearing Facility (SHSRF) or
Facility failed and had to be replaced. While staff waited for the new transducer to
arrive, one critical component of the Facility’s alarm system was off-line,
forcing staff to rely on secondary sensors if the intake pumps failed. Staff feels that having a backup pressure
transducer on-hand at the Facility is important in case of future equipment
failure.
Three pumps operate in the SHSRF “cold well” pumping cooled water from
the cooling tower to the Facility’s tanks and rearing channel. Each of these pumps has a backflow valve that
prevents water from going in the wrong direction. These valves get worn out over time from grit
and continual use and need to be periodically replaced. One valve was replaced last fall. If approved, staff will replace the other two
valves and have a backup valve on-hand in case of future failure.
Funds for the purchase of
pressure transducer and backflow valves will come out of the Facility’s General
Operations and Maintenance budget line item (2-3-1A), as approved in the District’s
Fiscal Year 2007-2008 Budget under Sleepy Hollow Facility Operations.
RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the District Board authorize expenditure of budgeted funds in a not-to-exceed amount of $3,500 for the purchase and shipping of the pressure transducer and three backflow valves.
IMPACT TO STAFF/RESOURCES: The mid-year 2007-2008 Fiscal Year Budget included $40,400 for General operations and maintenance of SHSRF. The $3,500 needed for the purchase of the pressure transducer and three backflow valves will come out of line item.
