SUMMARY: The District owns a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu with little or no value because of a major mechanical defect. District staff has contacted the Boys and Girls Clubs of Monterey County (Boys and Girls Clubs) about a potential donation of the vehicle. The Boys and Girls Clubs participates with a car donation program partner that picks up the vehicle, sells it at auction and forwards the proceeds to the Boys and Girls Clubs. Legal counsel has stated that this would be an appropriate method for disposal in this instance.
RECOMMENDATION: The Board should authorize donation of the District’s 2003 Chevrolet Malibu to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Monterey County. The Administrative Committee reviewed this item on March 14, 2011 and voted 2-0 to recommend approval.
BACKGROUND: The District owns a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu that was used by the Water Demand Division until it developed a major mechanical defect. The City of Monterey Mechanical Division which maintains the District’s vehicles estimated the cost of repairs to be $2,300. The vehicle, which has approximately 62,500 miles, would only be worth about $2,900 if it was in fair, running condition, making repair of the vehicle impractical. In the past the District disposed of used vehicles by auction or by advertising for bidders, however, that would not be feasible in this instance.
