February 2011

Total System for Month:  Total California American Water (CAW) system production for February was 928 acre-feet (AF), 19 percent less than the anticipated production of 1,148 AF, as shown on the accompanying table (Exhibit 26-A).

Total System, Water Year to Date:  Total system production for Water Year (WY) 2011 through February 28, 2011 has been 4,695 AF.

Groundwater Production:  During February, 130 AF of water were produced from CAW wells in the Upper Carmel Valley, even though zero AF of production was anticipated.  Lower Carmel Valley (LCV) well production was 753 AF, 32 percent less than the anticipated production of 1,113 AF.  In February, no water was produced by CAW from the coastal subareas of the Seaside Basin, consistent with the zero AF of production was anticipated.  Well production from the Laguna Seca subarea of the Seaside Basin which includes Hidden Hills, Bishop and Ryan Ranch water systems was 21 AF, 110 percent more than the 10 AF that was anticipated.  It should be noted that in February, 105 AF were injected into the Seaside Basin as part of the District’s Water Project 1 (formerly Phase 1 Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) Program) in the Seaside Basin.  Although this quantity is included in the 753 AF of LCV well production, it was not produced to meet customer demand.

Surface Water Production:  In February, no water was diverted through the Carmel Valley Filter Plant (CVFP) from San Clemente Reservoir, equivalent to the zero AF of production that was anticipated.  The total diversion through the CVFP for WY 2011 has been zero AF.  Average release to the Carmel River from San Clemente Dam during February was 262 cubic feet per second, as measured at the Sleepy Hollow Weir.

The anticipated river flow, storage and production values were developed jointly by the District, CAW, and the California Department of Fish and Game in consultation with the National Marine Fisheries Service.  CAW and District staff are monitoring reservoir storage, inflow and water quality, and will make additional changes as conditions warrant.  Please refer to Exhibit 26-A for additional information regarding CAW production in February 2011.
