May 2011

Total System for Month:  Total California American Water (CAW) system production for May was 1,376 acre-feet (AF), four percent more than anticipated production of 1,318 AF, as shown on the accompanying table (Exhibit 29-A).

Total System, Water Year to Date:  Total system production for Water Year (WY) 2011 through May 31, 2011 has been 8,615 AF.

Groundwater Production:  During May, no water was produced from CAW wells in the Upper Carmel Valley, consistent with the zero AF of production was anticipated.  Lower Carmel Valley (LCV) well production was 822 AF, seven percent more than the anticipated production of 769 AF.  In May, 489 AF were produced by CAW from the coastal subareas of the Seaside Basin, two percent less than the 500 AF that was anticipated.  Well production from the Laguna Seca subarea of the Seaside Basin which includes Hidden Hills, Bishop and Ryan Ranch water systems was 38 AF, 58 percent more than the 24 AF that was anticipated.  It should be noted that in May, 198 AF were injected into the Seaside Basin as part of the District’s Phase 1 Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) Program in the Seaside Basin.  Although this quantity is included in the 822 AF of LCV well production, it was not produced to meet customer demand.

Surface Water Production:  In May, no water was diverted through the Carmel Valley Filter Plant (CVFP) from San Clemente Reservoir, equivalent to the zero AF of production that was anticipated.  The total diversion through the CVFP for WY 2011 has been zero AF.  Average release to the Carmel River from San Clemente Dam during May was 93 cubic feet per second, as measured at the Sleepy Hollow Weir.

The anticipated river flow, storage and production values were developed jointly by the District, CAW, and the California Department of Fish and Game in consultation with the National Marine Fisheries Service.  CAW and District staff are monitoring reservoir storage, inflow and water quality, and will make additional changes as conditions warrant.  Please refer to Exhibit 29-A for additional information regarding CAW production in May 2011.
