SUMMARY: MPWMD received materials from the Association of California Water Agencies regarding opportunities for sponsorship of events schedule by ACWA for calendar year 2012. ACWA offers sponsorship levels of between $500 and $12,000 to support their conferences, symposiums, workshops and other events. Sponsorship of these events gives water agencies an opportunity to get their organization’s name out in front of the California water community.
During discussion of the item among the Public Outreach Committee, Directors Markey and Byrne recommended against sponsorship as a way to reduce expenditures where possible. Director Pendergrass supported sponsorship at the minimum level as a way to promote the District as a partner among other water agencies and increase influence beyond the local level.
RECOMMENDATION: The Public Outreach Committee reviewed this item on April 11, 2012, and voted 2-1 to decline participation in the ACWA sponsorship program for 2012.
BACKGROUND: In 2011, MPWMD participated in the ACWA sponsorship program at the $500 level.
