SUMMARY:
On August 13, 2014 the
California Legislature approved AB 1471, the Water Quality, Supply and
Infrastructure Improvement Act of 2014 – a new Water Bond that will be placed
before the voters in the November election.
If approved by voters, the measure would provide
$7.545 billion in bond funding for new surface and groundwater storage
projects, regional water reliability, sustainable groundwater management and
cleanup, water recycling, water conservation, watershed protection and safe
drinking water, particularly for disadvantaged communities, and other programs
the Association of California Water Agencies and its members have long advocated
as a part of a statewide comprehensive plan.
Of the $7.5 billion, only approximately $2.4 billion will be relevant to
the needs of the Monterey Peninsula.
Nevertheless, support for the bill is important.
The Association of California Water Agencies (ACWA) Board of Directors
unanimously approved support of Proposition 1 on August 19th. ACWA’s summary of the measure is attached as Exhibit 15-A. The General Manager provided a summary to the
Board at its September meeting and at the August Legislative Advocacy Committee
meeting.
A
proposed resolution of support is attached as Exhibit 15-B.
RECOMMENDATION:
The General Manager recommends that the Board of Directors adopt the Resolution
in support of Proposition 1.
