SUMMARY: In February, staff took Unit #8 (2005 Ford F-250, ¾
ton) in for routine maintance. The service
technician found a couple of major problems with the truck. The engine was leaking oil under the
crankcase, which indicated a failed seal from the engine to the crankcase. The technician informed staff that it had the
potential to damage the engine if required repairs were not made immediately. In order to repair the seals that were
leaking, the engine needed to be pulled out.
The cost of this repair was $3,216.26.
If required repairs were not made and the engine was damaged, a new replacement
engine would have cost approximately $15,000. The technicians also found an exhaust leak
behind the turbo unit, which was causing exhaust fumes to enter the cab of the
truck (driver safety issue) and would have caused the vehicle to fail future smog
tests. The cost to repair this item was
$659.66. Also, the parking brake unit was
in need of repairs costing $449.68 and the transmission was due for a 60,000
mile service, which cost additional $309.62.
The total cost of repairs for this vehicle was $4,700.88.
This vehicle is the most reliable diesel ¾ ton truck
in the fleet. It is used for heavy
hauling, towing and is necessary in the day to day operations of the Water
Resources Department. In the event the
fish truck is not operable, this unit is the replacement truck for that part of
the operation. Due to nature of the
repairs, General Manager’s emergency authority was utilized to repair this
vehicle.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the
Board ratify this expenditure. Funding
for these repairs are included in the Fiscal Year 2012-2013 Budget under line
transportation costs.
