SUMMARY: The
purpose of this item is for the Public Outreach Committee to discuss and
develop, in conjunction with Steve Leonard, specific topics that should be
covered in the Board’s August 30, 2007 workshop on California American Water’s
RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the Committee identify and discuss with Steve Leonard specific topics of interest that it would like to see covered in the August 30 workshop.
BACKGROUND: The District’s 2006 Strategic Plan contained several objectives aimed at fulfilling the Board’s three-year strategic goal of establishing respectful and effective relationships with the local water company, Seaside Basin Watermaster, and the land use jurisdictions within the District. On November 30, 2006 the Board’s Public Outreach Committee members (Knight, Edwards and Markey) met with Steve Leonard., Vice President/Manager of the Monterey Division of California American Water (CAW). The meeting involved an in-depth discussion to identify potential ways and means to further strengthen the working relationship and communication methods between the District and the CAW. Committee members and Mr. Leonard discussed and concurred in several specific actions to recommend to the Board, which the Board approved (with some refinements) during its February 22, 2007 regular meeting. The approved action list includes a request that Mr. Leonard make a presentation on how CAW is operated and funded at an August 30, 2007 Board workshop. The Public Outreach Committee requested that Mr. Leonard submit an outline of his presentation to the committee for review prior to the workshop.
IMPACT TO STAFF/RESOURCES: The impact to staff should be minimal because Mr. Leonard will prepare and deliver the August 30 presentation. The workshop will be conducted in the District conference room and televised at a cost of approximately $300.
