DRAFT for DISCUSSION March 27, 2008
Monterey Peninsula Water Management District
Public Outreach Committee
PUBLIC OUTREACH PLAN
OUTREACH PURPOSE STATEMENT
Encourage the public to
actively participate in water management, augmentation and protection for the
benefit of the community and the environment by actively involving, educating
and encouraging the public in contributing to solutions.
STRATEGIC ISSUES
FOR OUTREACH
1. Augmenting the water supply
·
Capture water
through rainwater harvesting at household, community level
·
Provide inputs
to proposals, planning, development and review of new sources of water for the
district, e.g., desalination, recovery and use of stormwater and treated
wastewater, etc. through public comment, political lobbying.
2. Promoting water conservation
·
Water
conservation, including but not limited to reducing but also reusing, recycling
and “drought proofing”
·
Standby water
rationing program (by conserving water, there will be less need for water
rationing in times of drought)
·
Balancing supply and demand (water demand is directly linked to conservation
measures: by reducing the amount of water used, lost and unaccounted for, there
will be less demand) (For discussion: Can the public
get more involved in the below?)
·
Water allocation
·
Water permit
process
·
Well
registration & reporting
3. Protecting the environment (Through conservation, we can fulfill order 95-10,
Public linkage between water use and protection of
