Action Items

1.         Receive Minutes of February 22, 2010 Committee Meeting

On a motion by Director Pendergrass and second by Director Markey, the minutes were received unanimously on a vote of 3 – 0.

Discussion Items

2.         Discuss and Recommend Actions to Maximize Water Conservation Opportunities During U.S. Open Golf Tournament

Ms. Pintar reported that she will meet with members of the visitor serving industry and suggest that they limit washing of cars during the event, and suggest other water saving measures.  A flyer has been developed that will be given to hotel/motel guests that encourages water conservation. Also, California American Water’s radio advertisements promoting conservation will be visitor focused in the month of June.

3.         Discuss Development of Greywater Demonstration Project

Ms. Pintar reported that Sustainable Pacific Grove, City of Pacific Grove staff, and the Monterey Business Council are interested in developing a three-phase demonstration project at the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History that would feature rainwater catchment, and greywater reuse.  Phase 1 would consist of a basic display with educational panels.  Phase 2 would be a full-scale demonstration garden with cisterns and containment systems.  For Phase 3, water will be pumped from the basement of the museum to a collection site to be constructed at Jewell Park and used for irrigation.   A laundry to landscape system could also be constructed, that would be non-operational since the museum does not have laundry facilities.  The goal is to have this project complete by June 2010.

4.         Update on Laundry to Landscape Greywater Reuse Training

Ms. Pintar reported that it would cost approximately $8,000 to conduct a five-day Laundry to Landscape Greywater Reuse training session.  She suggested that most people would benefit most from a one-day course.  The Monterey County Business Council may conduct a training session.  Installation of a t-valve is required for the laundry-to-landscape system. The committee members agreed that they would support the purchase of T-Valves by the District, which could be given to persons that complete a laundry-to-landscape training session.

In response to a question from the committee about use of greywater for toilet flushing, Ms. Pintar noted that a filtration and disinfection system would be required.  Some of the drawbacks of the systems are that greywater clogs the toilet flapper, and has a strong odor.  The County of Monterey would like to identify a location for a trial program, but will not allow installation in homes or business because the systems are not UL approved.

5.         Discuss May 1, 2010 Water Awareness Day Event and Public Outreach re Groundwater Replenishment Project

The committee members discussed the possibility of educating the public about the Groundwater Replenishment Project at the Water Awareness Day Event.  The consensus was that the District should take no action to promote the project until July 2010.

Schedule March 2010 Committee Meeting Date

The meeting was tentatively set for Thursday, April 28, 2010 at 4 p.m.

Adjournment

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 5 p.m.
