SUMMARY: The potential for increasing the capacity of Los Padres Reservoir was discussed by the Water Supply Planning Committee at its February 2 and March 8, 2010 meetings. The staff note for the March 8, 2010 meeting includes the following:
“It is recognized that in order to make any modifications to Los Padres Dam or Los Padres Reservoir, permission from California American Water (CAW), the dam’s owner, is needed. In responding to a District request, CAW General Manager Craig Anthony stated in an October 5, 2009 letter as follows: ‘[c]urrently, CAW has no interest in increasing the dam height or making other Los Padres Reservoir modifications.’ Unless and until this response changes, it appears there is no avenue for the District to pursue toward increasing the capacity of Los Padres Reservoir.”
At the March 8 meeting, the Committee members asked staff to report on this item in six months. District Engineer Andrew Bell contacted CAW General Manager Craig Anthony on September 7, 2010 and asked if there was any change to CAW’s position on modifications to Los Padres Dam and Reservoir. Mr. Anthony responded that there has been no change. Therefore, it again appears there is no avenue at present for the District to pursue toward increasing the capacity of Los Padres Reservoir.
